You Can With Canva!

Does trying to find images for your blog or website make you shudder? Do you throw up your hands in frustration when you realize the learning curve for Photoshop? Do you really want to start using Pinterest but worry about creating great images?  If you answered yes to any these  questions, then Canva may be the tool for you.

Canva is an online tool to help you create beautiful graphics for blog graphics, presentations, Facebook covers, flyers, posters, invitations, and just announced….Pinterest!

That’s right, Canva now has templates specifically to create Pinterest pins at the optimal size for engagement, 735 X 1102.  Before, when using Canva, you had to use the blog graphic template of 800 X 1200.  Now they have prebuilt post ideas to help you craft announcements, tips, recipes, collages, quotes and  much more.

So why would you want to use Canva in the first place?  For me it comes down to two things:  Speed and ease of use.

The ability to have templates to start an idea off is a huge time saver.  Canva includes hundreds of free graphics, photos, fonts, and layouts to choose from that really does allow for endless possibilities.  This video gives a great introduction in using Canva

The biggest benefit and probably the biggest drawback as well, is that Canva is entirely online.  When an account is created, the creation process happens completely via your browser.  Canva revolves around the simple drag and drop.  The biggest thing I had to get used to was actually how simple it was!  I was used to having grids and layers to fool with like in Photoshop.  Once I embraced and learned the ins and out the Canva interface, the creation process became much faster.

Using Pinterest More Effectively with Chef Dennis Littley

A power-packed line up, consisting of Les Dossey, Wade Harman, Stephan Hovnanian, Mike Allton, and myself sat down in January with Chef Dennis Littley for my Google+ HOA show, Manly Pinterest Tips, to discuss the ins-and-outs of Pinterest and how it can help food bloggers and other folks interested in social media.

Littley fell in love with cooking at a young age, and now you can read about his many gastronomic adventures at his appropriately named blog A Culinary Journey with Chef Dennis at

Chef Dennis started blogging in 2009, with the intention of helping his culinary students. He quickly found out, though, that his ‘Real Food for Real People’ mantra struck a cord with people all around the world.

Since then, Chef Dennis has embraced social media, particularly Google+ and Pinterest, hosting shows like Good Day Google Plus and The Bloggers Guide to Using Google+ Effectively, as well as a appearing on several of his colleagues’ shows, including mine.

In this episode of Manly Pinterest Tips, I discussed with Chef Dennis and the rest of the panel the many uses of Pinterest, especially for food bloggers.  We went over how to drive traffic to your site using Pinterest, how to get photos of food dishes to look as good as they taste, and why it is a good idea to post vertical photos on Pinterest.

We also touched on some changes coming to Pinterest, including rich pins and the new related pins feature.

Here is a list of questions we discussed:

What do you use Pinterest for? How do you use it in your food blogging? (1:41)
Where does Pinterest rate in driving traffic? (2:24)
Do you take all the pictures of your food dishes? Are there tricks to making it […]

Manly Pinterest Tip #4 | Pin Funny Stuff

As the last of 2013 winds to a close, many Mom’s and Dads are counting the hours until Christmas vacation is over, and the kids finally get back to school where they belong.

Dad’s, instead of hiding in your man cave, plan a fun night with the family using Manly Pinterest Tip #4:  Pin Funny Stuff

Create a board on Pinterest called “Funny Jokes”, “Funny Videos” or equally creative, “Humorous Hi-Jinks”.  Then, pin amusing stuff throughout the week to that board.  Remember, one of the cool things about Pinterest is that it isn’t just for pinning images, videos can be pinned as well.

Then plan a fun, family night and share your funny images and videos around the table with your family.  Or, better yet, create a group board for the entire family to pin to.  Then, have a standup comedy or joke night where everyone in the family has to go around the table and take turns sharing a joke, funny picture, or video.  Believe me, you’ll learn a lot about your kids sense of humor this way.

Let me get on my soapbox here for a minute.  Remember your kids learn their sense of humor from you.  Use this time to train them about what real humor is. Listen, I laugh like everyone else when I see a guy get smacked in the woo-hah with a bat on America’s Funniest Videos.  I chuckle when I look and see year book photos of 80’s hairstyles.  The problem is that I see a lot of images online that make fun of a person who looks different and is mocked and ridiculed because of it.  I don’t know about you, but I want my kids to protect and help people, […]
